Going Digital? The New Blueprint of Pinoy BusinessThinking of starting a business in the Philippines? It’s an exciting journey, but the rules of the game have changed for Pinoy Business. It’s not just about having a great product anymore. According to eCommerce pioneer Janette Toral, it’s about being street-smart, digital-ready, and a little bit boring (in a good way!).

Here are some simple steps to help you win in the new digital world.

Rule #1: Get Legit, Get Smart

You might think business is all about hustle and sales, but the first step is to get your paperwork right. The government is going digital, and you need to go with it.

  • Register your business. If you’re a freelancer or a solo entrepreneur, you can register as a professional with the BIR. If you’re a sole proprietor, you can go to DTI. For those who want extra protection, Janette suggests a One Person Corporation (OPC). Why? Because it keeps your business money and your personal money separate. If your business runs into trouble, your personal properties are safe. That’s a huge deal!

Rule #2: Be Careful with Money

It’s easier than ever to get a loan these days. With apps like GCash and Maya, you can get credit with just a few taps. This is a game-changer, but it’s also a big risk.

Janette warns that these are tools for investment, not for personal splurging. Use them to grow your business, not to buy things you don’t need. Be disciplined. Think of it this way: your business is your baby, and you need to feed it, not spend money on toys.

Rule #3: Use Digital Tools Wisely

The digital world is full of cool tools that can help your business, especially if you sell products.

  • Live Selling: Don’t just sit in your physical store waiting for customers. Use that time to

go live online! Talk about your products, answer questions, and build a following. It’s a

productive way to use your time and reach new people.

  • Digital Payments: People are used to using GCash and Maya. Make it easy for them to

pay you using these apps. The more options you give them, the more likely they are to

    buy from you.

At the end of the day, a good idea is only the beginning. The real winners are the ones who

combine a smart plan with the right digital tools, all while staying responsible and legitimate. So,

get your paperwork sorted, be smart with your money, and start using those digital tools to your

advantage.
