Origins

Takoyaki holds its place as one of the sought-after dumplings in the Philippines today. Takoyaki traces its origins back to Taisho-era Osaka, Japan.

Endo Tomekichi, a street vendor, introduced this delectable treat to the world in 1935. The name “Takoyaki” finds its roots in Japanese, where “Tako” translates to octopus and “Yaki” originates from “yaku,” meaning “to bake or grill.”

In the Filipino culinary scene, Takoyaki serves as the counterpart to the beloved local favorites.  Just like squid balls and other similar treats.

Crafted from a mixture of batter, diced or whole baby octopus, dried sakura ebi (red shrimp), pickled ginger, and green onion. Takoyaken Takoyaki boasts a flavorful blend. Topped with katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes), aonori (green seaweed powder), Worcestershire sauce or takoyaki sauce, and mayonnaise, each bite promises a burst of savory goodness.

Traditionally, Takoyaki is cooked in a specialized takoyaki pan, typically crafted from cast iron and featuring half-spherical molds. The robust iron ensures uniform heating, resulting in perfectly cooked Takoyaki every time.

Street vendors often utilize commercial gas-fueled takoyaki cookers, while electric versions resembling hotplates cater to home cooks.

Stovetop variations also offer convenience for those eager to whip up a batch at home.

Entering the market with Takoyaki presents a unique opportunity as few players currently offer such products. Launching a Takoyaken Takoyaki business from the comfort of one’s home opens doors.  By  introducing a novel trend to Filipinos seeking culinary adventures. Moreover, the versatility of Takoyaki allows for experimentation with various fillings such as beef, mushroom, or cheese. With its blend of nutrition and irresistible flavors, Takoyaki emerges as a delightful Japanese delicacy worthy of exploration.
